At this time of year, there is a lot of debate around the value of goal or resolution setting. Some swear by it, others swear at it! There are ardent supporters in both camps and there is good research to support but also to oppose the value of goal-setting.
No matter which side of the fence you sit on, it is important to have a clear idea of what you want out of life, and some idea of how you are going to get there. Whether this takes the form of formal, well thought-out mission statements, or more fluffy, less focused ideas of what you want your life to look like, having an idea of your ideal future allows you to ensure that the decisions you make in your life are taking you in the right direction to achieve that future.
Having a clear idea of where – and who – you want to be also allows you to know when you are going off track. Identifying early on that you are starting to veer away from your ideal future allows you to take quick and effective corrective actions to get back on track.
Knowing where you want to be in life also helps you to identify what you are currently doing in your life that is contrary to that future. If, in your ideal future, you want to spend time with kids and a loving partner, but at the moment you are spending all your time at work to gain material possessions, then you can see how your current life is not well set up to support your ideal future. You can put changes in place now that will get you what you want.
In solution-focused therapy, we work with our clients to help them define their ideal futures – either individually or as a couple – and identify the steps or actions that they need to take to get there. Some people find that having an objective person to act as a sounding board and ask the right questions helps them to define their vision of their ideal future more quickly and clearly. Frequently, one session is enough to allow our clients to take real and positive action towards their ideal future.
